More than 25 million people in developing countries work in export processing zones, where goods are mass-produced, wages are usually low and human rights are not always respected.
Part #1:
1. What is an Export Processing Zone
2. What is a sweatshop
Part #2: "Mickey Mouse goes to Haiti"
In the late 1990’s, the CEO of Disney was making $9 783 per hour. A Haitian worker making Disney products made 28 cents an hour. How long would it take one worker, working a 40 hour week to make what the CEO earned in one hour?
Part #3:
Pretend you are a leader of a company who has factories in Canada, The United States and Spain. The following chart lists the average salaries and number of employees you have working for you:
Country: | Ave. Salary: | Number of Workers: | Total Cost: |
Canada | $11.42 | 800 | |
United States | $10.56 | 1450 | |
Spain | $12.45 | 760 |
Imagine you fired ALL of your staff, closed the factories and opened a factory in an export processing zone, paying the same number of workers 40 cents an hour. How much would you spend on the new labour? How much would you save?
Part #4: Please post your answer to at least one of these questions:
1. Do Export Processing Zones exist in your country?
2. What is the impact of this policy on the people living there?
3. How do you feel about this issue?
4. What questions do you now have about EPZ's?

number 4: I feel strongly about this issue as i think it is unjust and unfair. If my country (afganistan) is working very hard for a small amount of money in return becasue that money is being paid to someone in a higher ranking. Sadly this is happening as Afganstan is sending goods like clothing to the united states. There is no tax and little money is given to the workers. I think that this is completly unfair because if it were not for the workers people getting paid like the CEO woyuld never make money. They are getting money for other peoples work. Also i find it sad that the workers have no clue this is happening. I feel that steps should b taking to support the Afgan workers. -Brynne

In my country, Epz is seen as EPZAT (Export Processing Zone Athourity Topix)in my country, they use mostly credit-cards. If you are new to the country, you cant use your credit-card to exchange money in Uganda. I fell that EPZAT is very bad because, you should't work soo hard for such little pay. Even thoug you have to work for your family, and they are counting on you. you shouldn't take that from people who are paying you very little an hour, day, week, and a year. i just don't feel very comfortable knowing that people all over the world are being used for clothes, shoes, labour.. etc...
ReplyDelete3. I feel that the EPZ is not right because the CEO is getting alot more money than the Haitian worker even if the Haitian worker is working harder than the CEO. I think this is unfair because it is like slavery all over again. They get paid little wages per day and they would have to work for about 4 years to get what the CEO earns in a hour. The Haitian worker is just as important as the CEO to Disney. The Haitian worker creates all of the items sold at Disney so the Haitian should get more money than the wages that they are getting right now.

QUESTION: Imagine you fired ALL of your staff, closed the factories and opened a factory in an export processing zone, paying the same number of workers 40 cents an hour. How much would you spend on the new labour? How much would you save?
ANSWER: Canda; total cost = $320
United States; total cost = $580
Spain; total cost = $304
so you would add $320 + $580 + $304 = $1,204
then $9,120 + $15,312 + $9,462 = $33,894
then i went $33,894 - $1,204 = $32,690
there it is the difference between the both of them is $32,690
