Week of Feb. 14th: Research

The United Nations has set the Millennium Development Goal that by the year 2015 every child can complete a full course of primary schooling.  According to your research, does your country meet the UN's Millennium Goal?  If not what are some factors that are preventing the children in your country from going to school?

  1. My country is Ecuador and the children are not fortunate enough to have money for school. The children have to work part time in order to make money. - Simon 7B

  2. My country is Indonesia and the childredn are not fortunate enough to go to school because the people don't have enough money to put their children in school so instead of sending them to school, they make them work.

  5. My country is Peru and the average years spent in school for the total population is 14 years. I couldn't find the information on how many children are in school. I'm not sure of why they are not going to school.

  7. My counry is Sri Lanka. My country does not meet the UN's goal. Some of the reasons why Sri Lanka does not meet the UN's goal is because the government does not invest any money at all to education and 23% of the people in 2008 were under the poverty line. Stephie - 7B

  8. I do not think that all the children in my country(Yemen) will complete a primary course by 2015 because. Yemen is not fortunate and does not have alot of money for schools. Also just by looking at the school expentancy of Yemen, you can tell that not everybody will not have completed a primary course by 2015.

This is it for now. I will add in more factors after! Thanks!

  9. I think that my country, Somalia, will not meet the UN's Millennium goal, because Somalia's literacy rate of people over 15 who can read and write is only 37.8% of the population in total, which is so less comparing the literacy rate to Canada's literacy rate (99%!!)I don't think Somalia will reach the goal either because approximately 43% of Somalia's population is living below the poverty time.

  10. I believe that Nicaragua is becoming closer to the UN’s goal. The literacy rate in Nicaragua is around 68%! So by 2015, this number will most likely grow. Despite these statistics, less than half of Nicaraguan children continue school after grade six. Some factors that are most likely preventing Nicaragua from the UN’s goal is most likely poverty. Nicaragua is the second poorest country in the western hemisphere. Most Nicaraguans live on less than two dollars a day! But if Nicaragua continues to progress towards education for all children, I believe that the country will reach the UNs’ goal.

  11. At the current moment there are many restrictions that are preventing Sierra Leone from allowing every child to go to school because there are still many reconstructions to make after the civil war. Though, at 2015 it might be a possibility IF they can speed up the process OR at least focus on the school factor for now instead of reconstructing buildings etc... because if many children are educated that can promote a more insight future. YES it is possible if the right step is taken.
